THE AXE-FX II BEGINS WHERE THE ULTRA FINISHED!
The Axe-Fx II has settled in nicely here in its new home. At the moment I’m using the Ultra and the 2 in parallel to compare my new setup with my old one. This has enabled me to see two things very clearly: firstly, I seem to have made very good use of possibilities the Ultra offered and secondly, the 2 begins at the point where the Ultra finished. Straight away, without any serious tweaking, I had a good sound and two minutes later it was better than anything I had achieved with the Ultra.
In a direct comparison of the same equipment (same amps, same cabs, no effects) I can clearly hear the improvements in the sound of the Axe-Fx 2. Everything sounds more open, more realistic and more free. Despite all the complexity it is much easier to get a good sound. Of course, years of experience using the Ultra do make a difference – when things get serious I know what parameters can make a subtle difference and thus have even more possibilities.
If you know what you are looking for (basic sound with no effects), just to selecting an amp model and a suitable cabinet is enough to get very close to your chosen sound and that’s before getting in to the further possibilities such as tone matching, IRs etc.
So, for me it’s a giant step and everything a guitarist needs as far as amp sound goes.
All the best,
