CHANGE YOUR AXE-FX II
Confusius: “By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third, by experience, which is the most bitter.”
Now, we all know that no Axe-Fx experience could ever be bitter and that every home-made sound increases not only one's own knowledge, but also the pleasure of using the device. And even without intense reflection Axe-Fx sounds tend to be very good indeed. This leaves us with the convenience of imitation, which is what we are going to look at in more detail here: using presets that other people have built.
THE FRUITS OF OTHERS' LABOUR
Every one of the 384 works presets in the Axe-Fx II provides useful stimulation for specific approaches and goals. You can learn how to build a frequency crossover, apply a virtual capo or create an automatic wah effect. And most of our customers find at least a few presets that they can use for their musical projects without having to make any changes at all.
WOULD YOU LIKE A LITTLE MORE?
But what about all that space on your computer's hard drive? It would be a shame not to use it for storing even more of these fantastic presets, wouldn't it? This is where Axe-Change comes in, with:
Presets for the Axe-Fx and Axe-Fx II and...
...IRs of loudspeaker cabinets for both products..
There are also search and systematic sort functions. The result is a huge preset library that caters for every music genre.
It is important to pay attention to the Model/FW information given with each preset description. This shows you which unit the sound was created on and which firmware version was in use at the time. The TMA column displays whether the ToneMatch block (Axe-Fx II only) was used. If this is the case the preset may well contain a 'genetic fingerprint' of an amp that is not included as a model in the Axe-Fx II. The author information can also be helpful: maybe you will find presets by someone whose sounds you already know and like.
There are already numerous presets available that exactly reproduce the sound of particular famous songs and many 'artist presets' are sure to follow. This will help you get as close as possible to your personal guitar hero's sound, but take care: once you've downloaded your role model's sound to your Axe-Fx you will have no more excuses and the rest will have to come from your fingers...On top of this there are now also many patches from Fractal Audio that use the new ToneMatch process to recreate amps that as yet are not available as separate models. The “Popular Downloads” section is just what you would expect, but there are also plenty of gems to be found in those patches that have not yet been downloaded so often. The only way to find out is to try them, which is easy and painless.
TRY IT OUT FOR YOURSELF
If you haven't tried it out yet, here's a simple method: first download the sounds that you are interested in (make sure they are for your model first). Then start Axe-Edit and open Axe-Manage. From there you can select the folder containing your downloaded files under Computer/Drives on the left-hand side.
On the right you will then see the files in this folder and can orientate yourself by looking out for the file icon that denotes a preset file .
EASY AND CLEAR
All you have to do now is right-click (Apple: ctrl+click) on the desired preset file and select “Audition” from the context menu that appears. The sound is then loaded into the edit cache of the Axe-Fx, where you can test it to your heart's content. If you want to keep it, you can save it to the Axe-Fx in the usual manner, otherwise it will be replaced when you audition the next sound. Of course there are plenty of other ways of getting these sounds into your Axe-Fx, but this solution is easy both to follow and rememb.
SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE
Of course, preset files can travel in more than one direction. After all, what's better than sharing your success? So, if you've created a great tone, why not upload it to Axe-Change and share it with the rest of the Axe-Fx community?
TO BE CONTINUED...
Future versions of Axe-Edit will integrate Axe-Change and make it even easier to use by making searching for, downloading and auditioning preset files possible directly from within Axe-Edit, with no need to save the files to your computer first. Just have a look back here every now and again. We'll let you know when it happens.
